Welcome to Hallgarth Care Centre
With capacity for 60 service users, Hallgarth Care Centre is a substantial facility.
Set in the heart of Durham City, the centre has easy access to the A1 motorway, Durham central railway station and a variety of regular bus services.
Each of the bedrooms has en-suite facilities and a nurse call system. Hallgarth also contains three comfortable day lounges, an air-conditioned conservatory and two dining rooms.
There is a choice of scenic views available from each of the rooms. Some overlook our beautifully cultivated lawn gardens, others the spectacular Durham Cathedral.
Services & Activities
We encourage service users to preserve their independence wherever possible. An important part of this is maintaining relationships with friends and family, for this reason we operate an open door policy and visitors are always welcome.
Quality of life at Hallgarth is paramount. As a result, the team of activities staff work continuously to ensure that we have a wide variety of services and activities available for everyone to benefit from. These include hairdressing, chiropody and other professionals such as opticians and dentists.
We have a Care Centre minibus which is used regularly for our various outings to local places of interest. We also have an in-house shop, newspaper delivery service and a lift for service users who have difficulty with stairs. Our service users regularly enjoy the use of the gardens and patio areas when the weather is good.
Celebrations
Hallgarth Care Centre recently celebrated its tenth birthday. We hosted a garden party with a Hawaiian Liau for service users, friends and family. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the entertainment, provided by none other than ‘The King’ himself.

Your Home
The comfort of our service users is extremely important. We never disregard the fact that this is your home. That is why we encourage you to bring personal belongings and items of furniture into your room, in order to create a comfortable, homely environment.
We also value your opinions and actively encourage service users to participate in decisions made within the centre. We hold regular residence committee meetings and always invite relatives along to care review meetings, as we understand their desire to be involved.
You are welcome to have visitors whenever you please, we will even prepare a meal for them if we know they are expected. If you wish to organise a get together for a special occasion, we will gladly accommodate you and your family.
